Bay Roes Installation & Troubleshooting

IMPORTANT NEW UPDATE AT BOTTOM OF THIS DOCUMENT (Section 9)

Section 1:     Installing ROES:

Windows:
The ROES Client uses an ActiveX tag on Internet Explorer for Windows to automatically download Java & install it on your machine. If your security settings prevent this, you can either alter the settings or download and install Java manually.
To alter the security settings:
Open an Internet Explorer window & go to "Tools">"Internet Options", select the "Security" tab, click the "Custom Level" button, scroll to "Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins" & select "Enable".

Mac:
Mac OS X comes with a version of Java installed. For lower memory usage & faster image manipulation users of 10.2.4 and higher should download the latest Java Updates via the Mac Software Update. ROES will work under older versions of Java available on OS X as well.

All platforms, downloading Java manually; Go to:
http://java.sun.com/getjava/manual.html and click the link for your platform. You'll be taken to a page to download an appropriate version, which can be saved to your hard drive. Run the installer & follow the prompts. In some cases on Windows, the Java Web Start installer won't run after the Java installer does. If this happens, go to: C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4xx\ (xx represents final version numbers, which may differ) and look for a file named javaws-1_2_0xx, & launch it. This will install Java Web Start, & your computer should then be ready to run ROES from the Bay Photo Roes Launch page. Java only needs to be installed one time. Subsequent application updates usually only require the download of roughly half a MB.

Section 2:     Running ROES:

Windows: Bay Roes can be launched from the Bay Photo web page, www.bayphoto.com. The second time you start Roes an icon will be created on your desktop. Also you can go to: "Start">"Programs">"Java Web Start">"Java Web Start" or "Start">"Run” & type "javaws"

Mac: go to /Applications/Utilities/Java/Java Web Start. Once the Application Manager is running, go to "File">"Preferences", click the "Advanced" tab, click the "Clear Folder" button, & confirm. Then, launch ROES from Bay Photo Roes Launch page. www.bayphoto.com

Section 3:     Tips and Toubleshooting:
Java may take several seconds to start up & initially retrieve the resources it needs to run. If a link is clicked repeatedly, this delay will only increase, as several instances of the application will start up. If you visit Bay Photo Roes Launch page & your hard drive starts running, then Java is starting up. Firewalls may prevent ROES from retrieving the files from the Internet that it needs to run. Firewalls may need to be disabled. If Java is completely installed & a dialog appears stating that print sizes or other items can't be found, a firewall may be interfering. If you encounter other unexpected errors or behavior, an error file called "roeslog.log" is saved. E-mail this file to us so we can analyze it to determine what happened.

The main folder that Bay Roes uses is called .BayPhoto. This folder contains the caches and the roeslog.log file. Deleting the contents of the .BayPhoto folder will often cure Bay Roes problems. To access the .BayPhoto folder:

For Windows, the folder is typically in:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\.BayPhoto or >Start>Search>.BayPhoto

For Mac:
/Users/Username/.BayPhoto. This file can also be found by performing a search on your home folder. On Macs, folders beginning with a dot are invisible by default. Use one of the following procedures to find the .BayPhoto folder:

Finder>Go>Go To Folder...type:~/.BayPhoto or simultaneously press Command-Shift-G & type the path in the text field. e.g.:
~/.roescache
~/.BayPhoto

Problem: After installing Photoshop CS when you launch ROES it starts up Photoshop CS instead. File is associated with wrong program.

Fix: Locate the “launch.jnlp” file (it is usually on the desktop) select the icon then hold down the apple key and “i”. Click on the "Open With" arrow then click below that where it tells you what application it is using. Change that to “Java Web Start” instead of “Photoshop CS”. Then where it says “Use this application to open all documents like this.” select “Change All...”

If ROES won't launch, first try to launch it from the Bay Photo Roes Launch page, instead of the desktop link. The Java Web Start cache may have become corrupted or out of date, & when this happens the desktop link can behave unexpectedly. If you still have trouble or appear to be launching an old version, you can empty the Java Web Start cache & download the application again from the Bay Photo Roes Launch page.

Section 4:     Clearing Java Caches:

Section 7:     Java Primer

Java is a programming language used in multiple applications. Stand alone software programs, web-based applications and even televisions and phones are using Java as their programming language of choice. The variability that Java provides an application far exceeds other software languages and applications.

Java works with Applets and Class files. An applet is just a mini application that runs within a browser window. A Java applet is the key to loading class files, the backbone of a Java interface. The class files are what defines how the application will appear, giving an application it's structure and appearance. The coolest thing about the way Java operates is it not only provides the ability to create a variable application but also can be shaped based on its usage.

Java gives the Bay Roes application power to conform to the user. It enables navigation of your hard drive to search for your image files; it allows the display of cropping guides; it allows you to rotate your images just to name a few. Plus it is both PC and Mac compatible.

Mac OS versions previous to OS X are not Java compatible and this leads to the requirement of OS X for accessing Bay Roes. By default OS X will come loaded with Java version 1.3.1. You do not need to update to version 1.4.1 of Java unless necessary. Information and download for Java 1.4.1 for the Mac can be accessed at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120197.

Basic trouble shooting of Java revolves around Java cache. Caching is a procedure that software programs perform to speed up your interaction with a website or a program. For example, say you are in Florida and you are accessing a website in Washington state. If you visit the page regularly your computer will store the website pages on your computer. This will save you from sending the web page request all the way to Washington each time you visit the site. This is similar to Java cache. Frequently used Java code is stored on your computer for quick and easy access. Caching can sometimes become a hindrance however. When a page becomes out of date or software changes are made, caching can prevent you from properly accessing a website or a software application. This is why web browsers and even some software programs give you the ability to clear cached files and start fresh.

Section 8:     Again, To clear your Java cache:

PC’s: Start Menu - Settings (Windows 98, 2000) - Control Panel - Java Plug-in -Cache -Clear

Mac OS X: Hard Drive - Applications - Utilities - Java - Cache - Clear

Section 9:     New Java Updates:

Hi everyone:

Sun has released a long-awaited new version of Java for Windows & Linux, 1.4.2_01, which has the following new features:

- fixes solarized image problem in Java 1.4.1
- automatic updating, so users won't need to manually update Java
- has a startup screen for immediate feedback that Java is loading
- faster startup & general usage

The launch link for the ROES Client has been updated, this will automatically install this new version for all first-time users on Windows. Users who launch the Client from a desktop link won't be affected. Users who want the new Java can uninstall their current one then use the link from the Bay Website to install.

Apple has also released a new version of Java for Mac OS X, 1.4.1 Update 1, which fixes drawing errors & memory problems.

Everyone is encouraged to update to these latest versions, but you are not required to.
