ROES Frequently Asked Questions

Troubleshooting Bay ROES

1. How to Clear your Cache

Most web-based issues can be resolved with a simple clearing of your Java and browser cach. It is very important to know how to perform these procedures.

To clear your Java cache:

PC Java cache: Go to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Java -> Cache tab or General Tab "Clear JAR cach" or "Delete Files"

Mac Java cache: Macintosh Hard Drive -> Applications Folder -> Utilities -> Java -> Java Plug-in Settings -> Cache -> Clear Cache

To clear your internet cache:

PC Internet Explorer: Tools -> Internet Options -> General Tab -> Delete Files

Mac Internet Explorer: Explorer -> Preferences -> "Web Browser" section -> Advanced Options -> Empty Cache

PC and Mac Netscape: Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Cache -> Clear Cache

PC and Mac Mozilla: Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Cache -> Clear Cache

PC and Mac Firefox: Tools -> Options -> Privacy -> Cache -> Clear Cache

Mac Safari: Safari -> Empty Cache

Once you've cleared your caches, restart your computer.

2. Running ROES with a Firewall Installed

Firewalls may prevent ROES from retrieving the files from the Internet that it needs to run. Firewalls may need to be disabled. If Java is completely installed & a dialog appears stating that print sizes or other items can't be found, a firewall may be interfering.

3. Updating Java Manually

Occasionally problems can be solved by updating the version of Java running on your computer.

To download the latest Java software, do one of the following:

Windows:
Visit the Sun Java Download Site http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Mac OSX:
Run Apple Software Updates (this will automatically check for the most recent version of Java available for your version of OSX)

4. ROES won't launch. What should I do?

If ROES won't launch, first try to launch it from the Bay Photo Roes Launch page, instead of the desktop link. The Java Web Start cache may have become corrupted or out of date, and when this happens the desktop link can behave unexpectedly. If you still have trouble or appear to be launching an old version, you can empty the Java Web Start cache & download the application again from the Bay Photo Roes Launch page.

5. I just installed Photoshop CS, and now Photoshop CS opens when I attempt to launch ROES. How can I fix this?

Locate the “launch.jnlp” file (it is usually on the desktop).

Select the icon then hold down the Apple key and “i”.

Click on the "Open With" arrow then click below that where it tells you what application it is using.

Change the application to “Java Web Start” instead of “Photoshop CS”.

Where it says “Use this application to open all documents like this.” select “Change All...

6. What do I do if I encounter an unexpected error or behavior while using ROES?

If you encounter other unexpected errors or behavior, an error file called "roeslog.log" is saved. Please email this file to us so we can analyze it to determine what happened.

The main folder that Bay Roes uses is called .BayPhoto. This folder contains the caches and the roeslog.log file. Deleting the contents of the .BayPhoto folder will often cure Bay Roes problems.

To access the .BayPhoto folder:

For Windows, the folder is typically in:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\.BayPhoto or >Start>Search>.BayPhoto

For Mac:
/Users/Username/.BayPhoto. This file can also be found by performing a search on your home folder. On Macs, folders beginning with a dot are invisible by default. Use one of the following procedures to find the .BayPhoto folder:

Finder>Go>Go To Folder...type:~/.BayPhoto or simultaneously press Command-Shift-G & type the path in the text field. e.g.:
~/.roescache
~/.BayPhoto

7. Problems Running ROES on Mac OSX

Some ROES users will experience a drop in performance or other problems while running the application on Mac OSX. The first thing to do if this occurs, is to check for software updates from Apple. Often, a system software update will include a new version of Java--the software that is necessary for running ROES.

To check for software updates on Mac OSX:

  1. Open the Apple Menu by clicking on the Apple icon in the upper left hand corner of the screen.
  2. Click on Software Update.
  3. The Software Update window will open, and your computer will begin checking for updates. NOTE: You must be connected to the internet to successfully check for and install updates.
  4. If your computer has found any new software, it will be displayed in the window.

To install software updates on Mac OSX:

  1. Follow steps 1-4 above.
  2. Check the Install box next to the software update you want to install. Note: You do not need to install Airport or iPod software updates if you do not have these items.
  3. Click the Install button. You will most likely be asked to provide your password, and to agree to licensing terms. Follow the instructions to proceed with the installation.
  4. Restart your computer.

Some problems can also be solved by running First Aid from the Disk Utility in the Applications folder. Apple recommends running First Aid every 15 days.

Visit http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n7565 for instructions on using the Apple Disk Utility.

If these steps do not solve problems with ROES, please follow the instructions for sending your ROES Log to Bay for troubleshooting.
